Scientific Research

Scientific and technological progress is a decisive factor for the development of economy and medicine. With it, the cause of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China has been developed rapidly in recent years. There were 36 and 170 academies of TCM in China in 1978 and 1997 respectively. 6 programs of TCM are listed as the key subjects at the State level. "Basic Research of Key Problems in the Modernization of Chinese Pharmacy" and "Study of Meridians and Collaterals" are listed as the alternative projects in "the Ninth 5-Year Plan" of China. " The National Clinical and Experimental Research Centers for New Herbal Medicaments were set up in Beijing and Guangzhou, which will bring the study of herbal medicaments into a modern hi-tech area. According to incomplete statistics, from 1978 to 1994, more than 500 achievements of traditional Chinese medical scientific research won scientific and technological progress prizes at the State and Administration levels, and over 20 items won international prizes.

In the past 20 years, the trade of herbal medicaments has seen great success in the unity and reorganization of medicine, scientific research, industry and trade. Facing medical treatment, production, market and social needs science and technology present unprecedented vigor and power. Power of some scientific research institutions has been greatly strengthened. For example, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine has updated instruments and devices and more than 4,000 staff members, of whom there are over 600 research fellows, associate research fellows and persons holding corresponding technical posts. Under the academy are 17 functional bodies in charge of scientific research, medical treatment and teaching. It has become a "State team" in the field of TCM.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially since 1978, great progress has been made in traditional Chinese medical science and technology. By the end of 1995, there were 75 independent academies and institutes for scientific research across China with more than 10,000 professionals, of whom over 60% had received higher education. There were nearly 100 scientific research organizations under the universities and colleges of TCM and their affiliated hospitals with about 20,000 part-time scientific research workers who basically had college educational background . A scientific research system formed by the national, provincial and municipal academies and medical organizations and universities and colleges as its main body, and a scientific research contingent with TCM personnel as its backbone in different disciplines at various levels have been preliminarily formed.

The ability and whole academic level of TCM in prevention and treatment of diseases have been steadily enhanced. New progress and better curative effect have been achieved in treatment of commonly seen and frequently encountered diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease, malignant tumor, immune and infectious diseases. New achievements have been made in processing of Chinese medicinal herbs, improvement of drug forms, technology of cultivation, and development of new drugs. Through the research of processing of some Chinese medicinal herbs the scientific basis for increasing effect and reducing toxicity has been found. New drug forms of traditional Chinese medicaments not only enhance the curative effect but also facilitate their use by patients. With the research of the technology of cultivation of Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae) their scantiness is relieved and the local natural environment is improved, ecological balance is maintained and better economic and social benefits are obtained. In academic research, both theoretical and applicable studies have entered a new area. New progress has been made in the research of meridians and collaterals and "syndromes". With the traditional Chinese therapy the curative effect for shock, acute DIC, acute myocardial infarction, acute kidney failure and other life-threatening diseases is improved.

The external and internal environments of the research institutions of TCM have been strengthened. Equipment, experimental animals, books, the construction of information network, and other working conditions for them and the living conditions of the staff members have been improved. In terms of research programs 13 conventional ones have been replaced by 30 ones.
